Vintage Cognac Bottles

Welcome to the Reverie

Welcome to Cognac Reverie! I’m thrilled that you came across this blog and I hope you enjoy what you read, but above all I hope you learn something new. I’m guessing you’re here because you’re interested in cognac. That’s wonderful! Cognac has long been my favorite spirit, both to sip neat and use in cocktails. After a recent trip to France, driving through the cognac countryside, it secured its place in my heart. But maybe you’re not really sure if you like it or not, or you don’t even know what cognac truly is. Perhaps you saw a beautiful ad for Hennessy in a magazine, heard Snoop Dogg rap about Landy in his cup, or your grandfather drank some in a giant snifter after dinner from time to time and you just don’t get it. If that’s the case, don’t worry. This blog is here to help guide you on your journey with this beautiful, complex, and alluring beverage.

But why write about cognac? Well, if you scour the internet, you’ll see countless blogs and review sites for American whiskey. Rum, tequila, and gin also have some amazing and dedicated people working hard to help you make sense of those spirits. Because of those blogs and review sites we can find ample amounts of wonderful information in those respective categories. But something has become glaringly obvious to me. There isn’t much being written about cognac.

If I have a question about a specific bottle of cognac I want to buy, I really have to dig around online. And even then it gets muddy. Brand websites usually just give you the basic talking points on the bottle and a little blip about their history. Marketing and PR companies produce those beautiful Instagram images, but don’t really say much about the product itself. And then you’re left desperately searching on Google for literally any scrap of data you can find. Luckily, being a bartender and beverage consultant for a while now, I have a decent amount of people I trust to contact with questions. However, I imagine the average enthusiast is left confused, sometimes even more so than they were originally because of the incorrect reports found from these little bits and pieces on the internet. After watching so many YouTube videos from self-proclaimed “experts” that couldn’t answer some basic questions about cognac, I just about lost my mind! While perusing comments on posts that were spewing wrong information that readers were then sharing across their own social media platforms, I finally felt I had to take a shot at representing the spirit I love so much.

So, what am I really trying to say here? Simply put, Cognac Reverie is for people of all learning levels who are interested in or curious about cognac. This blog aims to change the conventional image of cognac and encourage a different way of thinking about the spirit category. Posts here will focus on educating readers by giving them easy to understand material to make informed decisions while embracing the many different aspects of cognac. Basically, I’m here to spread the good word of cognac near and far. And hopefully, with your support, this blog can become a beacon of light in the vast sea of internet inaccuracies.

With that said, I would like to again welcome you to Cognac Reverie. Routine posts should begin soon ranging from history, aging practices, production methods, interviews with industry leaders, and even some reviews. Feel free to contact me via the ‘Contact’ page with any questions or add your comments to any of the posts. I will always try to respond as soon as I can. Don’t forget to subscribe to get email notifications when new posts go live. I look forward to traversing the world of cognac with you. Santé!
